MTH102 – College Algebra

Math 102 focuses on the use of the real number system in arithmetic, algebra and geometry.  Students will become proficient in the arithmetic of integers, fractions, and decimals along with the use of exponents and the order of operations, as a precursor to the study of algebra.  The properties of real numbers will be explored and applied to build up to algebra, which will include topics in polynomials, solving linear equations, solving linear inequalities, absolute value equations, ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning.  The course additionally includes the arithmetic of radical expressions, simplifying radicals, and solving quadratic equations using a variety of methods.  Some explorations will include solving more equations of quadratic type; for example, cubic and bi-quadratic equations.  The course additionally contains an emphasis on problem solving and the use of linear and quadratic functions and their graphs.
