MA105 - Introduction to Microbiology / Surgical Asepsis
The world of micro-organisms is introduced. Pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, helminthes, and rickettsiae are related to common diseases and infections. The chain of infection is identified and defined. Defense mechanisms and the inflammatory response are discussed. Surgical asepsis is defined and discussed. Study includes sanitization, disinfection, and sterilization procedures. Common instruments are identified. Surgical aseptic technique is developed including gloving, tray preparation, and dressing change. Working with a sterile field is discussed. Students will practice vital signs, venipunctures and injections. Students will develop typing and 10-key skills. (50 hours)
