MA202 - Medical Billing and Coding
This course is designed to introduce students to coding and classification systems and nomenclatures, indexes, registers and registries as well as the basic principles and uses of each. In-depth coding technique using the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), the CPT coding manual, the standard data set, the HCFA insurance form, and current procedural terminology are taught. The course will cover the development of an insurance claim beginning with a charge slip, to the transfer of ledger card information, to a claim form and claim follow-up to include Explanation of Benefits. The student will also have a basic understanding of the following insurance programs: Blue Cross/Blue Shield Plans, Medicare/Medicaid, Champus (Tricare), Champva, Workers’ Compensation and disability compensation programs. Students will develop typing and 10-key skills along with word processing skills. (100 hours)
