Overview & Accreditation

The Vocational Nursing program provides students with the theory, interpersonal, laboratory skills and clinical experience to prepare them for a career as a vocational nurse. Lecture and skills laboratory take place on campus while the clinical training takes place at various health care facilities.

The vocational nurse functions as a member of the health care team who provides basic nursing care, administers medications, reports and documents patient signs and symptoms, and carries out therapeutic and rehabilitative measures. 

Upon successful completion of the program, Graduates are awarded either an Associate of Science degree or a diploma depending on degree level chosen and is eligible to sit for the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) to become licensed as a Vocational Nurse (LVN).

The program is provisionally approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) at the Alhambra Campus and fully approved by BVNPT at the Riverside Campus.

GRADUATION FROM THE PROGRAM DOES NOT GUARANTEE ENTRY INTO ANY CAREER. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS MAY APPLY DEPENDING ON AN INDIVIDUAL’S PREVIOUS EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE.

Platt College maintains an active career services department to assist graduates as well as current students seeking part-time or full-time jobs while attending school. However, the school cannot guarantee employment.

Students are given the opportunity to pursue job referrals maintained by Career Services.

The Vocational Nursing program is delivered on campus in a structured cohort format and includes:

Yes. The Vocational Nursing Associate Degree Program is approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT):

  • Provisional approval at the Alhambra Campus
  • Full approval at the Riverside Campus
  • Platt College also holds institutional accreditation by ACCSC and approval to operate by BPPE.

Graduates of a BVNPT-approved vocational nursing program may be eligible to apply for licensure, subject to applicable requirements.

In California:

  • Graduation from a BVNPT-approved program is required to apply for the NCLEX-PN
  • Passing the NCLEX-PN is required to become licensed as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
  • Program completion does not guarantee licensure.

No. This program is delivered on campus and includes required in-person laboratory instruction and supervised clinical education.


The Associate Degree includes general education coursework in addition to vocational nursing instruction.
